Grocery Store Couponing: Beginning (Months 1-4)
Okay, I get a lot of emails, stops in grocery stores and occasionally phone calls on how to start grocery couponing. I am avoiding vacuuming the kitchen floor and decided to write a post just about this topic instead (hence the inspiration for the lazy part of the title here).
Here goes.
You need to numbers tattooed on the insides of your eyelids. First, your average grocery budget. Second, how much you spend eating out every month. I don't care what those numbers are by the way, but you need to care.
Your goal is to halve those numbers in the next 4 months.
Now, take 1/2 of the money you spent eating out and put in in en envelope. That is your budget for coupon shopping this month. With that in mind, I would take the rest of that budget for eating out and put it in another envelope. That's all you get for your Big Mac fix this month, make it count. If you have self control issues, I would do this for a few months to keep yourself honest.
Continue grocery shopping as usual for now. Understand that for the first few months you won't see much of a change in budget, truly. You may even spend more than usual if you aren't disciplined. That will pass.
Now, you are going to make yourself a routine. Pick a day of the week and a time. You are going to go grocery shopping at that time every single week, whether you buy 10 things or 100. The reason is that you are forming a habit and learning a skill. You have to be consistent to really make it work.
Now, I like the pinchingyourpennies grocery list. Check your state (obviously mine is Idaho) and find out when each week's list comes up. When it does, print it. Mark the items you need (hint: I only shop the red 4 and 5 star deals) and decide how many coupons you have for these items if applicable. And hold on, we will talk about coupons in a sec. Take this list, write down your estimated total remembering that tax will change things and put your coupons in an envelope or baggie or whatever you want to use to hold them.
Now, for the coupons. I take each week and with a sharpie I mark the date on the front. I don't clip anything. I put them in a binder or in some kind of file (pick the file type you like) and I only pull them out when the pinchingyourpennies list tells me to pull the ad. Then I clip. MUCH easier!
Remember, couponing is a bit of trial and error. You will rock some weeks and suck it up the next. The bad weeks make you better at couponing and you need to learn on your own. A lot of people want to follow me around a store and shop, but I can promise you that you'll never be good a couponing if you follow that tactic. With that in mind, they will be easy peasy!
First off, how did January go?
I'll be honest, I did not rock at unplugging every appliance in my house that I was not working. So, this is going to be a year long goal for me. It's actually that hard for me!
Here we go:
Baby tightwad goal:
Put flour and sugar in a 5 gallon bucket and store somewhere in your kitchen to use when cooking. Refill when it runs out.
Big Kid tightwad goal:
Do the above PLUS buy 2 18 gallon totes (those rubbermaid things) and put 4 unopened 25lb bags of flour and sugar in each one. 100lbs of storage! Rotate it of course and keep replenishing.
Master tightwad goal:
Aquire buckets for oatmeal, popcorn, salt, brown sugar, powdered sugar, honey, beans... you get the picture. Watch for a sale on the totes and when it hits go nuts! Also get totes to go through your kids clothing. make a cut in to rags pile, a garage sale pile and a keep for the next kid (or your sister's kid) pile.
Go!

I am schooling Albies!
Yes, I'm over budget. Again. But... I'm buying groceries for my Mom this week and she is reimbursing me, so in reality I'm not over budget.
Anyhow, here is what I've done so far this week:
Feb 19: Spent: $45.84 Saved: $1060.06 (Insane!)
Feb 21: Spent: $87.80 Saved: $898.06
I am LOVING this sale!
I've been taking advantage of the fact that when you buy 5 fruit snacks you get an extra $3.50 catalina on top of the $10 one. PLUS I had a ton of $.50 off 1 fruit snack coupons, which caused the fruit snacks to be FREE plus they made me $.20! Woot!
I've been buying toaster strudels for $.50 a box, cake mix for a quarter (and stock up, my pal Dawn has a recipe for using cake mix to make cinnamon rolls that I am getting for ya'll--- any kind of cake mix!), chex mix (people the turtle flavor is amazing) and progresso soup (for my mommy) for a quarter!
This is an incredible sale!
Listen, I have coupons for pillsbury biscuits that will make it so you MAKE $.07 a tube that I need to use up and I'm running out of freezer space. I have dibs for a few people already, but if you want a few (no promises that I won't run out fast), come to the Broadway Albertsons at 9am Monday. I am going because a reporter is interviewing couponers there at that time, and I would love for some of you to come too and talk about how fun couponing is at Albies.
It should be fun and I'm hoping they'll have some more coupons for everyone! But again, no promises...
Oh, and btw.
Here is what we have found to do with the Grands so far:
biscuits (duh)
dumplings. Plop the dough (rip into the portion sizes you want) into soup--- like say progresso chicken noodle soup) and there you go.
put on top of a rice, chees, broccoli etc casserole and bake them.
flatten and make mini pizzas (did this tonight. fast and yum!)
flatten and make cinnamon rolls
make apple baker pie tart thingys
wrap around chicken and bake
Okay, I'll think some more. Any other ideas?

Local couponing story... and drama...
So, yesterday I was on the news. For 2 seconds. at 5pm. Before we get there, let's go over the entire day and it is way more fun to tell a story when I add the wacky details.
9am. Me. Home.
I did my hair all "catlady" looking (this is code for it looked really bad and I was okay with that as the goal was to NOT go anywhere for the day).
I realized I HAD to go to IF for some dr stuff for the baby. So, I hopped in the car. On the way I decided to just peek in the Ammon Albies to see how the sale was. I'd hear that Broadway was totally wiped out of all the stuff I wanted (of course after the insanity from Wednesday I wasn't surprised to hear that) so I didn't know what I would find in Ammon.
There were PYPers everywhere! I talked to at least 3 people doing pyp! So exciting! Plus, I found out that the store had at least 800 coupons for FREE Grands biscuits and the product too! I bought 40 of them along with some fruit snacks, etc. I came out pretty thrilled. Spent about 12 and saved 200. Woot!
12pm. Me. Home again.
I made a critical error here. I told people how great my deal was at Albies and then, in an even more critical error, I offered to get people biscuits. I offered myself into buying 310 of them! By then I realized I'd have to go back in that day to get everything so, back in the car I hopped, 3 kids in tow.
1pm. Me. Albies.
Again, I'm seeing all sorts of pypers and we're gabbing over the sale. I'm telling everyone to get their Grands... fun stuff! The checker found out that you can do about 15 sets in a row (btw) and that was exciting. My kids were getting really burned out, but we were carrying on. Suddenly I see a reporter who wants to talk to me about all of this couponing madness. Sounds fun... except.
So I did my thang.
DUDE.
Today I deeply regret it.
Here's why.
Here is my honest opinion on pay vs free sites. I like the free ones best. Of course. BUT, I also get that some people need to be spoon fed something as complicated as couponing. I'll be extremely honest here. I started pyp 5 years ago. BUT, I didn't start doing the grocery deals until 1 year ago. I only did the online deals. Wanna know why? It was just too darn overwhelming for me to start.
What finally got me started was a friend (the same friend who parterned in SYD btw) who walked me through it. She let me call her 100 times a day, answered every question, celebrated with me when I found a good deal and consoled me when I screwed up on a deal. If I had not had an actual human helping me, I never would have figured out couponing. If my friend had been wise she would have charged me for all her time and it would have been worth it to me.
I feel like I'm a pretty intelligent gal. If I am confused on something, I'd bet others are too.
Now, I help with a weekly coupon group. We do the pyp grocery lists and talk deals. It's a lot of fun, but occasionally we get newbies who really really need help. Frankly, I don't have that kind of time on my hands and if any of them asked me if they should sign up for a pay coupon class or site, I'd tell them to go for it. Here's why: They need more hand holding than I (or any other person teaching couponing as a free service) and give. We live in a society where time is money and so it is only right to pay to take up someone's time. If someone WANTS an easier way to coupon, that is the way. Speaking very specifically, I've seen the Stretching your Dollars website and I think it is great for beginning couponers. I believe once people get better they'll graduate to a site like pyp, but in the interim, I see nothing wrong with paying to learn.
Now, for those who don't want to pay to learn... don't! Good for you! You'll save a lot of money, but you'll have to work harder. I think that is great. pinchingyourpennies is a great site and I credit it with teaching me how to save in nearly every aspect of my life.
*** But... in this day and age of choice, no one should have to be exclusive to anyone or anything, except your spouse. I think that's a good choice to be loyal to a spouse, but that's just me...
Another note on free websites. Nothing is free. Advertisers pay money for you to have a free site and that is great. Nobody should ever complain about that. People should just realize that someone is picking up the tab (which again, is just plain awesome for us free users of any site!)
Here is my final thought on the matter. I looked like crap,but very few people saw me at 5pm so I'm okay with that.

I'm sick of this competitive coupon website drama. As a small business owner, I've learned the hard way about competition and this is what I've learned: There's room at the table for everyone. Be gracious. Be the bigger person. I've struggled to do that myself more than once, but it's important. If you can't do that, then just ignore whatever thorn is in your side. Odds are they'll go away eventually... or you will.
There are pros and cons to both kinds of businesses and it is up to the consumer to choose which is best for them.
I always go back to this example:
When I worked for the Bon, I had a business meeting where I listened to reps from Kitchenaid and Cuisinart talk about their products. The Kitchenaid rep spent all the time dissing on other brands, particularly Cuisinart. So, when we met with the Cuisinart rep next, one of the first questions asked was, "how does product xyz rate compared to Kitchenaid product xyz?" The very intelligent rep said, "I'm not here to talk about Kitchenaid or any other brand. I'm here to talk about Cuisinart." And off she went. I was so very impressed with that. It actually colored my opinion of Kitchenaids for years and is partly why it took me so long to buy a Kitchenaid mixer (even though I love it now).
Okay, I'm hopping off the soapbox. I hope overall more people start couponing and getting deals and I really don't care how they do it!

They freeze jim dandy and if you go to pillsbury.com and search for Grand recipes you will find a lot to do with them. A few suggestions: pizza crust and dumplings for soup.

Tips for the BIG sale at Albertsons this week!
Okay, I've seen the ad and I'll be blunt.
At first glance I was totally peeved that I was told this was awesome.
Then... I had a change of heart.
People, this sale is a nasty, convoluted mess. There are some things that totally threw me off. But, now I get it and I love it.
I am not making you scenarios until I've tested them (and that might not be for a few days, sorry), but this is what I STRONGLY advise you to do. Feel free to get coupons for other items such as: toaster strudels, pillsbury ready made cookies, betty crocker warm delights or frosting... but, the first items, I would get fo sho.
If you go to the Idaho Falls Broadway Store at 4am tomorrow, have fun and be prepared for a long line. If you don't want to buy coupons, this is the way to do it. I will not be there, so good luck.
This sale works basically like this:
Buy 10 participating items, get $10 on your next order (yep, one of those)
Remember, this means LOTS of transactions, so be patient, let people go in between your transactions if they are just shopping and not a crazy couponer (think of how frustrated you would be) and be patient. I WOULD NOT take little kids to this if at all possible as this looks to be a 2 hour wait in line type of sale.
Organize your transactions ahead of time and be prepared for things to be out of stock. Use betty crocker cake mix as your filler as it's only $.25 a package of cake when you are done and everyone needs cake mix.
Remember, this is one of those sales that the cardinal rule of couponing goes into effect: DO NOT stray from the LIST! (unless your items are out of stock and then you need to use the Betty Crocker cake mix like I said. Cake mix is your saving grace!) Don't do it. Obey the list or face certain grocery budget doom.
I suggest putting your coupons together with paper clips for each transaction and maybe even labeling them so you aren't confused (you know, trans 1, trans 2, etc.)
Go slow, double check each transaction AS they are ringing it through so you don't slow anyone down and remember to BE NICE!
There is a lot of prep in a sale like this, but it will be worth it if you get it done.
Now, here is one deal that my friend Melanie told me that is great.
*This is contingent on getting enough progresso coupons to cover it.
Lets say you buy 100 cans of Progresso soup. They will be $.50 a can, but then you have 50 coupons for $.50/2 cans of Progresso. That makes them $.25 a can and your total for 100 cans $25 Wow!
Now, really think. If you are a small family, you could buy 356 cans WITH purchasing coupons and your overall total would be UNDER $100! That is a years supply of dinner (or lunch) for less than $100! 1/3 of your food storage!
Why in the world would you NOT do that? Cans keep forever, the soup is really healthy... This one is a no brainer. Even without the coupons it is an excellent deal, but with... amazing.
This is an opportunity to put a huge dent in your food storage and I cannot urge you enough to do so. Take your tax return, take $200 and go nuts.
Okay, when I go shopping I will let you know what I do. Don't feel stressed to shop right this second, this sale goes until next week. (Unless you want the free coupons at Broadway Albies, then you need to get up and be there by 3:30, promise).
Also, remember, anything fridge or frozen in this sale will keep a long time in the freezer, so shop with that in mind.

Albertsons, you are KILLING ME!
This is what I for the previous post.
I get this little email from the Broadway Albies in Idaho Falls. It's got the usual good deal stuff, but here's the part I need to share pertaining to the HUGE sale that is coming on the 18th:
1. General Mills. Get the coupons and be ready. (Remember, General Mills typically entails Betty Crocker, YoPlait, Pillsbury, Progresso, etc. My words, not Albertsons in parenthesis here.) I would print a TON of all of these and then trade/share as needed.
2. 4am opening! Yep, 4am! Just for that day! Just at the Idaho Falls Broadway Albertsons! Just for the people who us email recipients invite! So I invite YOU! (And any and all of your special friends and family you want to bring along.) ONLY on the 18th!
I promise, I will be talking about this sale more, but right now, you would be wise to quit reading, start organizing and printing coupons and tucking some cash away! These are my favorite kinds of sales and I always use my entire month's moolah on them!

Smiths actually has a great sale!
I am nervous about typing this for fear that I'll get stoned (not that kind, the kind with rocks people) by all my favorite grocers, but I have to admit that Smiths sales this week are... good. Really good.

I DO hate Walmart, but...
Bah, I hate even posting this, but I must.
I went to Walmart yesterday. That's right.
We were pricing out trampolines for the kids (a battle Sam and I have been waging for years and I am finally triumphant!), and we had to check Walmart. Because, as much as I hate Walmart, I do love a deal more and Walmart is full of deals.
While we were there we noticed a TON of the 4, 5 and 6 gallon buckets for storing food in their canning aisle. Decent prices too, better than most places I've looked at. Also, this is a great time to buy their canning jars and lids, prices seemed to be lower than in the summer.
Also, the clearance is fantastic right now. I got a vacuum for my bathroom (the one with the cat litter box and yes, it is only for that room. blech) for under $20!
So, there you go, Walmart and deals in one sentence.
Now to wash the shame off of me...
